Modern Spearhead

Modern spearhead

Electronic warfare rules revue

So Ian and I tried out the EW for moderns and came up with a novel approach to using it.

When building a force/army you will need to have a EW vehicle to provide you with EW missions.

For each vehicle on or off table you will be allowed one EW mission per turn. This mission will be chosen at the end phase of the previous turn and set aside to use on the next.

Each vehicle will have a small set of cards with the EW mission on them to be chosen

Radio jamming
All enemy artillery and aircraft response call suffer a -1 this turn
Radar jamming
All enemy AA roll to hit suffer a -1 this turn.
Platoons noted as priority D
Radio location
Locate one enemy BC or higher HQ or FO
May be fired on using counterbattery fire
Use priority as per 16.1.3A
Radar Location
Locate one enemy radar guided air defence platoon
Platoons noted as priority D
May be fired on using counterbattery fire
Use priority as per 16.1.4A
Anti-electronic warfare
Prevent one enemy jamming or location
Mission
Must still roll on EWC chart to use

The card chosen will be played in the relevant section of the turn, using a D6 roll on the EW chart (page 37) to succeed in the mission.

The anti-electronic mission is played after a jamming and location card has been played to prevent the mission.

Multiple EW vehicles may be used giving multiple EW missions per turn.

Two or more of any card can be used on one mission giving you a +1 on the dice roll

e.g. 3No radio jamming cards played by a NATO commander would pass the mission on a 2+

The anti-electronic card if successful when played would cancel one of those cards making it a 3+

Off table vehicles suffer a -1 to any roll.

The vehicle when on table will not be attached to any fighting battalion and have the recon rules for spotting e.g. 3”

The vehicle may only issue missions if stationary and is treated like a FAO for combat .

The EW vehicle may be added to the radio location card if desired ( must have used a mission last turn  to apply)

Let me know what you think.

Excellent idea. There is some much more to think about with the modern stuff. Just one thing to the radio and radar detection. A unit that is not actively using its radar or radio won't show up so can't be spotted. Hence the reason why the north Vietnamese and More recently the Bosnian Serbs only switched on their Sam launcher radar equipment at the last moments before firing on American and later NATO jets to avoid being pinged by 'Wild Weasels' and killed. I think the rule set suggest that a AA unit can only be located if it has fired in the previous turn or a HQ has been given or has issued an order change during the previous turn

Also recon vehicles in modern spearhead are spotted at same distance as normal vehicles unless they count as an infantry recon stand . of course if your happy for me to park an invisible leopard II on your doorstep, I'm open to suggestions . There not in small jeeps or armoured cars any more!

That's a good point! Might need to differentiate between recon and recon support?
